Commercial battery installation case studies
These are install projects, not payback stories — how the connection, siting and switchgear were actually engineered and commissioned.
500 kW / 1 MWh containerised BESS installed at a Midlands manufacturer
A precision manufacturer needed to add production load but the DNO quoted a long reinforcement for extra import capacity. Existing 400 kW rooftop solar exported surplus at midday. The site had yard space but no spare plant room. The install challenge was siting a container safely, tying into live HV switchgear without stopping production, and connecting on a constrained network.
- System installed
- 500 kW / 1 MWh LFP containerised BESS with G100 import/export limitation, integrated with existing 400 kW PV
- Annual saving
- £96,000 (red-band DUoS avoidance, lifted solar self-consumption, deferred reinforcement)
- Payback
- 6.6 years
- Commissioning
- Witnessed
Outcome: Container craned onto new hardstanding with NFCC-compliant separation and firefighting access. HV tie-in completed in a single pre-agreed 4-hour outage. G100 limitation let the site add production load inside its existing capacity. Witnessed G99/G100 commissioning; full O&M and fire documentation handed over. G99 submitted at survey so the DNO milestone did not extend the programme.
1 MW / 2 MWh install enabling EV charging on a constrained logistics depot
A regional distribution depot wanted to electrify 40 vans and add 8 rapid chargers, but the DNO quoted a six-figure reinforcement and an 18-month wait for extra import capacity. The existing connection was nearly maxed at peak. The install had to buffer charger spikes and stay within agreed import capacity.
- System installed
- 1 MW / 2 MWh LFP containerised BESS with G100 import limitation, installed with the charging infrastructure
- Annual saving
- Avoided ~£180,000 reinforcement capex plus ~£40,000/yr off-peak charging and demand-charge savings
- Payback
- 7.2 years
- Commissioning
- Witnessed
Outcome: Battery and chargers designed and commissioned together on the existing connection, live in 5 months instead of waiting 18 for reinforcement. G100 holds the site within agreed import capacity and buffers charger spikes. Coordinated commissioning of storage and chargers; single accountable contractor across G99, civils, install, and testing.
200 kWh indoor cabinet install for a cold-storage facility
A chilled-distribution site where a grid outage risks tens of thousands of pounds of stock relied on an ageing diesel standby generator. No external compound was available, so the battery had to go in an internal switchroom with an islanding design for the refrigeration critical load, in an occupied building.
- System installed
- 100 kW / 200 kWh LFP indoor cabinet with islanding capability for the refrigeration critical load
- Annual saving
- £26,000/yr (solar self-consumption and off-peak arbitrage) plus avoided diesel running and de-risked stock loss
- Payback
- 7.8 years
- Commissioning
- Witnessed
Outcome: Cabinet installed in a compartmented, detected, ventilated switchroom to PAS 63100 principles with the insurer engaged up front. Automatic transfer engineered into the existing distribution for seamless ride-through of outages. Diesel retired as primary backup. Witnessed commissioning with fire and electrical certification issued.
